You CAN get a flat stomach without doing a single sit-up

We’ve all spent time doing sit-ups and crunches with the aim of getting a flatter stomach, maybe even a six pack, but sit-ups will not get you either.

No matter how strong your abs are, if they’re covered in a layer of fat you just won’t be able to see them. Exercises like sit-ups don’t reduce fat from the stomach area and fat spot reduction is simply a myth.

The facts

There are 3 ways to get a flat stomach.

1. Build muscle

2. Do fat burning cardio

3. Focus on your diet

Build Muscle

Learn to love weights. Most calories that you use are burnt in the muscles, so the greater the muscle mass that is active the more calories that you will burn. This is not just during your workout but also throughout the day as you boost your basal metabolic rate. Building more muscle will result in less body fat and more calories burnt. Combine this with a quality cardio workout and you can reach your goals.

Do fat burning cardio

Focus on exercises that challenge numerous muscle groups at the same time. The best example I can give is a HIIT workout known as Metafit. It combines short, intense bursts of exercise targeting the whole body and it’s main aim of keeping your heart rate high throughout. It includes a lot of core strengthening work such as rotational planks that are great for your abs but has the added value of using your own body weight to create the resistance. Combined with a programme of weight training in between sessions, you’ll burn that excess fat in no time.

Focus on your diet

There is an old saying that abs are made in the kitchen, and I’m afraid it’s true. You cannot out run a bad diet, no matter how much work you do. A diet high in processed foods, salt, sugar, saturated and trans fats will hugely hinder your flat stomach.

I’m not saying that you need to eat like an Olympic athlete in training, but you do need to cut down on your refined sugar and complex carbs and look to increase your protein intake. I’ve written previous blogs about how to change and stick to a healthy diet and still enjoy the good stuff, but the simple thing to remember is that your body is an amazing machine and with better quality fuel it will look and feel better…..and you’ll start to see some stomach definition.

If you need help to change your body shape, get fitter, feel leaner or with any other goals that you may have, then please do not hesitate to get in touch. I would love to be part of your journey.
